But can this tactic actually help you achieve healthy, sustainable weight loss? tapped three experts to find out, and the truth is, there’s no magical cutoff for when carbs are OK and when they’re weight-loss enemy No. 1. But there are definitely smarter ways to consume carbs that will help, rather than hinder, your weight-loss goals.

First of all, it’s important to realize that “carbs” can mean a lot of things.

Bread and pasta aren’t the only foods that have plenty of carbs. “Carbs are in almost everything, from fruits and vegetables to whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds,” Lauren Harris-Pincus, M.S., R.D.N., owner of Nutrition Starring You , tells SELF. So, giving up all carbs after lunch would be pretty difficult.

The “bad” carbs that are most often associated with weight gain are simple, or refined, carbs. “Refined carbohydrates [like those in white bread and pasta] digest very quickly, so their sugar gets into the bloodstream very quickly as well,” Shawn Talbott, Ph.D., a nutritional biochemist, tells SELF.

Complex carbohydrates , found in whole-grain pasta, whole-grain bread, and fruits and vegetables, often come packed with fiber, which can bulk up food and slow the digestion process. The result is you feel full for a longer time versus if you were to eat simple carbs—and the result of that is that you end up eating less. Hence, whole-grain, high fiber carbohydrates can actually help promote weight loss .

Now, as to the question of eating carbs late in the day: It’s understandable why people think that’s a bad idea, but it’s a fallacy.

There’s the theory that the closer to bedtime you eat carbs, the less time you’ll have to “burn” them off, meaning the carbs will convert into fat as you sleep. That’s a myth, says Talbott. What’s true is that carbohydrates are converted into glucose for energy , and some get stored in your liver and muscles as glycogen , says Talbott. Excess glucose—in other words, sugar that your body isn’t able to use right away or convert into glycogen—can be stored as fat , he explains.

But that’s not a carb problem, that’s a math problem. Eating too much of any food, carbs or otherwise, can result in eating too many calories, and extra calories can get stored as fat.

Plus, sometimes you might need a good dose of carbs in the evening.

If you like to exercise after work, it’s important that you give your body the energy it needs. “Carbs are fuel for your body the way gas is for your car,” Harris-Pincus explains. If you’re cutting back on refined carbohydrates after 3:00 P.M. and instead eating whole foods—including complex carbs—that keep you fuller for longer then sure, you could lose weight . But it’s not because you didn’t eat those high-calorie, low-nutrient foods after a certain time of day—it’s because you didn’t eat those high-calorie, low-nutrient foods at all. Cutting refined carbs will help you choose more nutrient-dense options that have fewer calories and tend to make you feel more satiated, says Talbott. That can translate into a calorie deficit , which is necessary when you’re trying to lose weight.

Curbing carbs at night won’t work if your portions are still larger than you need. If you’re not eating balanced, satisfying breakfasts and lunches, you might be tempted to eat more than necessary for dinner, says Harris-Pincus. That can make it harder to lose weight, even if the food you’re eating is lean protein, fruits, and vegetables. “Ideally, you want to build your meals with a healthy balance that includes about half fruits and vegetables, a quarter lean proteins, and a quarter whole grains,” while sticking to serving sizes that are appropriate for your fitness and weight-loss goals, she explains.

What Is Retinol Cream?

Retinoids and retinol cream products were originally developed in the 1970s as an acne treatment. They also are used as a way to help treat aging skin, psoriasis and warts. You may have heard of Retin-A. Retin-A was the first prescription retinoid, Tretinoin, that the FDA approved nearly 40 years ago, but even today you cannot get it without a prescription. How to Make Homemade Retinol Cream

First, you’ll want to pour some carrot seed oil and rosehip oil into a glass measuring cup (see the full recipe at the end of this article). Carrot seed oil is a great natural retinol that contains high levels of vitamin A. It comes from the seeds of Daucus carota, also known as Queen Anne’s Lace. Carrot seed oil is one of the key ingredients in this recipe because it is so high in naturally occurring vitamin A. (5) Rosehip oil is great because it is high in vitamin C and provides anti-aging benefits such as protection from age spots.

Next, place a shallow pan on the stove with about 2 inches of water in it and heat the water on low. Place the measuring cup in the pan, acting as a double-boiler. Now, add the almond oil and the apricot oil. Almond oil is great because it acts as a moisturizer and does not clog pores. Apricot oil is also a great moisturizer while offering vitamin A. Add these ingredients and stir, keeping the heat on low.

Add the shea butter and green tea extract. Shea butter will add creaminess to the mixture while providing amazing skin healing benefits. Green tea is known as the anti-aging tea. Green tea extract benefits the skin much in the same way due to its numerous polyphenols it contains. The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits include helping reduce acne while fighting the signs of aging.

It’s no secret that shea butter is great for the skin. Shea butter is rich in both vitamin A and vitamin E, making it the perfect choice for this anti-aging recipe! Once added, stir until you reach a creamy texture.

Lastly, add the anti-aging essential oils, lavender and frankincense. Lavender essential oil does more than relax you; it gives the skin a boost because of its antimicrobial and antioxidant characteristics. Additionally, lavender and frankincense both help reduce age spots. Frankincense also helps eliminate acne, wrinkles and scars.

Lemon essential oil contains a ton of vitamin C and while you don’t want to over do it because the skin can be very sensitive to the potency of pure vitamin C, one drop added to this mixture can offer some amazing skin-glowing benefits by reducing photoaging. (6)

Make sure to blend all ingredients well. Remove from heat and allow it to cool. Once cooled, place in a glass container. Using a dark glass container will help it to last longer or you can store it in the fridge.

How to Use Retinol Cream

Apply a small amount to the skin at night before bed. Make sure to apply it to clean skin. Use my Homemade Honey Face Wash, then pat dry.


When using retinoid or retinol-based products, it is best to start with applying them every third day. Given that retinoids can cause some initial irritation, it helps to allow the skin to get used to it before going to daily use. Using it at night helps because using it while in the sun can cause sensitivity to the skin. Regardless, you will need to wear an all-natural sunscreen anywhere that you may be applying the retinol cream.

If you are pregnant, check with your doctor before using retinol or high doses of vitamin A.

Make sure to clean your skin and pat dry before applying the retinol products. To minimize skin irritation, it is best to avoid using with other skin care products — especially if they contain benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, resorcinol or salicylic acid. Using tretinoin with certain medications may cause your skin to be more sensitive to sun exposure. (7)

Because this blend includes citrus oils with phototoxicity traits, be sure to avoid exposure to sunlight for 12 hours after applying it to your skin.

DIY Rosehip Retinol Cream with Lavender

Total Time: About 10 minutes

Serves: 1; Makes about 2.5 ounces


  • 1 tablespoon organic rosehip seed oil
  • 10 drops organic carrot seed oil
  • 1 tablespoon organic almond oil
  • 1 tablespoon organic apricot oil
  • 1 teaspoon organic shea butter
  • ¼ teaspoon green tea extract
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops frankincense essential oil
  • 1 drop lemon essential oil
  • small glass measuring cup

What are some things to consider when setting weight-loss goals?

RD: I'm a big fan of holistic goals—not everyone can lose weight at the same rate and pace. Somebody who has time to do all kinds of meal preparation and go to the gym may have a very different path from somebody who's busy taking care of aging parents or children. So I think you need to be realistic.

I always tell people, "Be careful not to just steal someone's diet plan." You say, "I'm gonna do this whole hog," and then you do it for four days and before you know it, it's something at your kid's school or your church or something with your mother. And you feel like you've failed the whole thing. So I often tell people to spend a week getting to know their own rhythm. Everyone has great intentions on Sunday afternoon—and by Wednesday they're buried in a bowl of ice cream. So it's about taking real stock of what you can do. And what that means then, in using holistic goals, is that you may go slower than somebody else.

What else?
Talk to your health care provider, especially if you have any other kind of health conditions. Because before anyone makes a radical change in how they eat or how active they are, they should check in with a medical professional.

What's a reasonable time frame for meeting my goals?

RD: I think six months is a reasonable amount of time. Six months is enough time to make some significant changes in routine and habit. In six months you may go through a couple of seasons. You might experience a couple of holidays or other typical weight-loss challenges. Six weeks is not enough. But by six months, even if all you've done is dump the soda, or you're no longer getting the afternoon Frappuccino or cupcake, that's huge.

How should I track my progress?

RD: These days we can keep so much data on our weight loss. We have apps on our phones and our fitness trackers. It's a blessing and a curse. It can be very rewarding to see that you're meeting your goals and doing what you're supposed to. You can say, "Hey look, I've done my steps, I've done my workouts, I've eaten this and I drank that." The risk is—and I say this as somebody who has studied and worked around eating disorders—is if we get too caught up in the benchmark, it can almost get obsessive. You want to make sure you don't get so caught up in the numbers and all the rest that you lose the forest for the trees.

You lost 85 pounds in 17 months. Did you start by setting certain goals?

RD: I was so convinced I was going to fail, I didn't tell anyone. That way if it didn't work out, I wouldn't embarrass myself. I couldn't even go up a flight of stairs when I started. But we had a treadmill at home and I said, "Any week I don't lose weight, I'm going to up my time on the treadmill by 5 minutes." I literally started with 5 minutes, and then 5 became 10, 15, 20. And I stopped all the stuff I knew to stop, like drinking soda. I used to eat birthday cake for breakfast. I cut out all fast food. And then I let myself eat whenever I was hungry, but I could only snack on fruits and vegetables.

Should I share my goals with other people?

RD: Some research has shown that engaging in weight-loss and exercise goals with a group helps, because everyone motivates each other. But other studies have shown that it can actually be difficult for some people if they're not losing weight at the same rate as others. Even if they're doing beautifully, they get discouraged and give up. Sometimes mixed-gender groups are tricky because men tend to lose weight a lot more easily than women do. Once again, it really depends on who you are and how you work.

Do my weight-loss goals ever need to change?

RD: I'm a big fan of assessing your goals every month. Go back and see what works and what doesn't. If you find yourself thinking, "If I have to eat one more carrot, I'm going to kill someone," you've got to reassess (and probably pick a different vegetable). Maybe you change jobs, or your schedule changes. A lot of people get stuck thinking, "Once I start doing this, I've got to see it all the way through." Not necessarily. It's like when you're doing your bills for the month. You sit down and see what's working and what's not.

What if I don't hit my weight-loss goals?

RD: Everybody loses weight at a different pace. Weight loss is one of many things to measure on your way to better health. Other measures can be things like, how much did you exercise today? How many steps did you take? Or how many stairs did you climb? How much water did you drink? How much soda didn't you drink? We forget to pay attention to things like that. And those goals are equally important, because those are the kinds of goals that can stay in place for a lifetime.

Maybe you didn't lose 10 pounds in six weeks. But maybe you did hit your gym goals. And before you know it, that becomes a habit. You may not end up a size zero, but you may be setting yourself up for diabetes prevention, stronger bones and going into older life with a sharper mind.

So the real key is habit formation. That's why it's such a good goal. Because if someone said, "Hey, I stopped drinking soda. I don't drink any soda, or I drink just one soda a week." I'd be like, "You did great. That's wonderful. I don't give a damn if you haven't lost weight." Or a person says, "Now I'm cooking at home five nights a week when I used to eat fast food three nights a week." That's huge.

It's about taking stock of all of your healthy and unhealthy habits, making modifications and creating new habits. If weight loss comes as part of that, consider that a bonus.

How easy is that for women—to think of weight loss as a bonus rather than the goal?

RD: I think it's probably hard for women. At the end of the day, so many women want to be a certain size or look a certain way. In my clinical work I've seen so many people believe, "If only I were thin, then all these wonderful things would happen." And sometimes they do. But usually life stays the same, only you're just the thinner version of yourself.

But if you make healthy changes and get into the habit of eating fruits and vegetables, of packing the carrots for work and maybe hitting the gym or going to yoga class, whatever it may be—you've just put money in the bank account of health. To me, weight loss is almost the icing on the cake.
